Reclaiming your pet

The St. Paul Animal Shelter is the holding facility for stray animals found in the Town of St. Paul. We also house animals brought from the County of St. Paul after their initial stray hold is completed.

As the holding facility, we are required to adhere to the local bylaws, including the required stray hold periods.

Step One: Identify your pet

If you believe your pet is in our care, you will be required to complete a walk through our facility to identify your pet. We may also request to see a picture of your pet before releasing it to you.

Step Two: Payment of Fines

All fines for your animal running at large are to be paid at the appropriate municipal office before the animal can be released by the shelter. Please contact the St. Paul Animal Shelter prior to coming to reclaim your pet, to ensure the appropriate procedure is followed.

Step Three: Payment of Impound Fees

In addition to any fines incurred, the St. Paul Animal Shelter charges additional fees for housing your pet at our facility. Fees are as follows:

  • Impound Fee of $90 for first 72 hours
  • Boarding fee of $20 per day per animal after the 72 hours
  • Vaccination fee of $40 per animal (all animals are vaccinated upon arrival, unless previous vaccination history is known)
  • An optional microchip fee $40 per animal if the owner wants

At least one piece of government issued ID,  and payment of all impound fees is required prior to release of the animal.

Important information

If you do not reclaim your animal before the required holding period has expired, your pet will become property of the St. Paul Animal Shelter. For more information on reclaiming your pet, please contact us.
